    Anisotropic Scalar Field Dark Energy with a Disformally Coupled Yang-Mills Field

    In the context of scalar-tensor theories, the inclusion of new degrees of freedom coupled non-minimally to the gravitational sector might produce some appealing effects on the cosmic expansion history. We investigate this premise by including a canonical SU(2) Yang- Mills field to the total energy budget of the universe coupled to the standard quintessential field by a disformal transformation. From the dynamical system analysis, we study three cases of cosmological interest that span most of the physical phase space of the model: the uncoupled limit, the isotropic, and the Abelian cases. New scaling solutions with a non-vanishing gauge field are found in all cases which can be interesting for early cosmological scenarios. Some of these scaling solutions even exhibit anisotropic features. Also, the background evolution of the universe is studied by means of numerical analysis. As an interesting result, the disformal coupling changes the equation of state of the gauge field from radiation to matter at some stages of the evolution of the universe, thereby the gauge field can contribute to some fraction of the total dark matter. We have also quantified the redshift-dependent contribution of the gauge field in the form of dark radiation during the radiation era to the effective number of relativistic species.     Carbon-fiber tips for scanning probe microscopes and molecular electronics experiments

    We fabricate and characterize carbon-fiber tips for their use in combined scanning tunneling and force microscopy based on piezoelectric quartz tuning fork force sensors. An electrochemical fabrication procedure to etch the tips is used to yield reproducible sub-100-nm apex. We also study electron transport through single-molecule junctions formed by a single octanethiol molecule bonded by the thiol anchoring group to a gold electrode and linked to a carbon tip by the methyl group.     Experimental study of out of equilibrium fluctuations in a colloidal suspension of Laponite using optical traps

    This work is devoted to the study of displacement fluctuations of micron-sized particles in an aging colloidal glass. We address the issue of the validity of the fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) and the time evolution of viscoelastic properties during aging of aqueous suspensions of a clay (Laponite RG) in a colloidal glass phase. Given the conflicting results reported in the literature for different experimental techniques, our goal is to check and reconcile them using \emph{simultaneously} passive and active microrheology techniques. For this purpose we measure the thermal fluctuations of micro-sized brownian particles immersed in the colloidal glass and trapped by optical tweezers. We find that both microrheology techniques lead to compatible results even at low frequencies and no violation of FDT is observed. Several interesting features concerning the statistical properties and the long time correlations of the particles are observed during the transition

    Decentralized Energy from Waste Systems

    In the last five years or so, biofuels have been given notable consideration worldwide as an alternative to fossil fuels, due to their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by partial replacement of oil as a transport fuel. The production of biofuels using a sustainable approach, should consider local production of biofuels, obtained from local feedstocks and adapted to the socio-economical and environmental characteristics of the particular region where they are developed. Thus, decentralized energy from waste systems will exploit local biomass to optimize their production and consumption. Waste streams such as agricultural and wood residues, municipal solid waste, vegetable oils, and algae residues can all be integrated in energy from waste systems. An integral optimization of decentralized energy from waste systems should not be based on the optimization of each single process, but the overall optimization of the whole process. This is by obtaining optimal energy and environmental benefits, as well as collateral beneficial co-products such as soil fertilizers which will result in a higher food crop production and carbon dioxide fixation which will abate climate change

    Generating actionable predictions regarding MOOC learners' engagement in peer reviews

    Peer review is one approach to facilitate formative feedback exchange in MOOCs; however, it is often undermined by low participation. To support effective implementation of peer reviews in MOOCs, this research work proposes several predictive models to accurately classify learners according to their expected engagement levels in an upcoming peer-review activity, which offers various pedagogical utilities (e.g. improving peer reviews and collaborative learning activities). Two approaches were used for training the models: in situ learning (in which an engagement indicator available at the time of the predictions is used as a proxy label to train a model within the same course) and transfer across courses (in which a model is trained using labels obtained from past course data). These techniques allowed producing predictions that are actionable by the instructor while the course still continues, which is not possible with post-hoc approaches requiring the use of true labels. According to the results, both transfer across courses and in situ learning approaches have produced predictions that were actionable yet as accurate as those obtained with cross validation, suggesting that they deserve further attention to create impact in MOOCs with real-world interventions. Potential pedagogical uses of the predictions were illustrated with several examples
